Earlier today I submitted my petitions and paperwork to appear on the ballot for one of three open seats on the Byram Township Council in the November 3rd election. I’m making a commitment to continuing working with my colleagues on the governing body to make or town a better place to live and work, and I look forward to the opportunity to serve the residents of Byram for another four years, if it is their wish that I do so.

And the plants just keep on growing! Another week of major garden harvests! And another week of good growth for the fall planted crops. On Saturday, all the beans, beets, carrots, kohlarbi, lettuce, radishes, and squash are sprouted and growing strong. Just nine weeks until the end of the season, and the days are growing shorter, but there’s still plenty of time for harvesting even more Jersey Fresh goodies from the garden!

Yum! Good things from the garden. Grilled pork tenderloin, with cucumbers, wilted chard sauteed with onions, peppers and cherry tomatoes. Delicious dinner on Friday, August 28th. Oh. So. Good.
So with a whole lot of tomatoes, and a big bunch of peppers & onions, and an afternoon of hard work…nearly a gallon of Jersey Fresh salsa! This is where all the work of the spring and summer is paying off. It’s going to make for mighty tasty eats this winter!

The 2015 garden season continues strong – and wet, and hot! Weather all year has been nearly perfect, if anything maybe a little too wet, especially this week. A freak downpour Thursday night dumped over two inches of rain in a couple of hours on the already wet garden. Mix in a little wind with 5-foot tomato plants, and you have all the ingredients for a tomato disaster.
Tomato disaster in Plot #63, Roseville Community Garden? Fortunately, the plants were not permanently damaged and only a hand full of tomatoes knocked off.

Another good week for growing in the garden, and much progress was made on the second season. Some of the fall crops – the Bolero carrots, Nero Tondo radishes, summer squash, green beans, dill and kohlrabi are planted. But a couple of surprise thunderstorms this week made the soil too muddy and caused a change of plans, so the last rows of beets, cherry bell radishes and Carioca lettuce are yet to be planted. That will happen this week.
It was a good week for harvesting and preserving eats as well, as the photos below will show you…a very good week. And I’ve included some ‘artsy’ views from within the garden itself to finish off the post. Enjoy!

Knock on wood… the weather this 2015 gardening season has been spectacular for growing. Let’s hope it keeps up like this for the rest of the year.
Spent some time harvesting, weeding, turning soil & preparing for additional garden activity this week. The seeds from Johnny’s Selected Seeds for the fall crops – Bolero carrots, Carioca lettuce and Nero Tondo radishes – as well as additional green beans, beets and summer squash are in hand and ready to go. The garden’s all set. Let the second season begin!

Here’s a look at what I harvested Saturday (above), as well as the views of the garden from the other three corners (below) after the jump.

This week I’ve begun preparation for the ‘second season’ in the garden. The green beans – which had maxed out in their production over a week ago – have been pulled, as have the zucchini & yellow squash plants. They’ll be replanted for a second crop, as well as some additional beets and kohlrabi. The seeds arrived today from Johnny’s Selected Seeds for the fall crops of Bolero carrots, Carioca lettuce and Nero Tondo radishes – they’ll all be in the ground by week’s end!
Here’s a look at what I harvested last week, and what I did Saturday to make sure I can enjoy the fruits of the garden over the winter. Plus, some more beautiful garden flowers images!
Let the preserving and canning begin! 4 pints dill pickles, 2 pints pickled beets, and 10 jars of zucchini-orange jam.
We’ve hit ‘peak-garden’ this week, with the zucchini & yellow squash plants now beginning to fade, beets and kohlrabi rows opening up as they are harvested, and green beans maxed out in their production. Time to start preparing the second wave of planting for fall crops of beets, carrots, kohlrabi and additional green beans.
Here’s a look at what I’ve been doing to enjoy the fruits of the garden, both immediately and for storage over the coming months. The major canning, preserving & freezing is only just starting!
